Chamundeshwari Temple – Mysore The Story of Goddess Chamundeshwari

The Sri Chamundeshwari Temple complex is well-known beyond India. The holy Sri Chamundeshwari Temple stands atop the Hill. Chamundi, also known as Durga, is a furious manifestation of Shakti. She defeats the demons Chanda and Munda and the buffalo-headed Mahishasura. They have worshiped Chamundeswari, a goddess, for many years.

About Chamundeshwari Temple

Trimuta Kshetra, a holy site encircled by eight hills, is mentioned in the ‘Skanda Purana’ and other ancient literature. Sri Chamundeshwari Temples, located on one of the eight hills, are to the west. Historically, the Hill was known as Mahabaladri, after the local Shiva temple, Mahabaleswara Temple. There is no older temple in the hills than this one.

Due to its association with the central figure of the ‘Devi Mahathme,’ the Hill eventually became known as the ‘Sri Chamundeshwari Temples. It is widely held that the Goddess is a reincarnation of Parvati, Lord Shiva’s wife. Every year, the temple is visited by many devout people from all over the country and even the world. They have faith that the Goddess would grant all their wishes.

Guide to Chamundeshwari History

This ancient temple has a history dating back over a thousand years; it started as a little shrine before growing to its current size. Since the Wodeyar kings of Mysuru, who came to power in 1399 A.D., were big admirers and worshippers of the Devi, Chamundeswari quickly rose to religious prominence after they adopted her as their deity.

On the hills are several more temples than just the Chamundi and Mahabaleswara ones. The ‘Nandi’ monolith statue is one among these intriguing sites. Visitors are drawn to the statue of “Mahishasura” as they make their way to the Chamundi Temple.

 In 1827 A.D., Krishnaraja Wodeyar III restored the shrine and erected the stunning Gopura tower at its front. After receiving the Goddess’ blessing, Krishnaraja Wodeyar, an ardent devotee, donated a ‘Simha-vahana’ (A lion-shaped vehicle) and other valuable animal cars and gems to the temple. Even now, the vehicles are employed in religious processions.

The Chamundeshwari Temple is open for darshan and worship from 7:30 until 2:00 in the afternoon, from 3:30 to 6:30, and from 7:30 to 9:00 in the evening. Those interested in attending the pooja should come during those times.

 The times for the abhishekam are in the morning from 6:00 to 7:30 and in the evening from 6:00 to 7:30. The hours are 5 AM to 6.30 AM on Fridays. Free meals are provided daily for worshippers from 12:30 to 2:30.

How To Reach Chamundeshwari Temple Mysore?

On the way to or from Mysore, you could catch sight of the Chamundi Hills. These hills are approximately 13 kilometers distant, so that you can get there quickly and easily by car. It has road connections to both Mysore and Nanjangud. The hills are easily accessible by bus or taxi for visiting tourists.

From Mysore, you can get one of the KSRTC buses that leave every 20 minutes and head for the hills. There is a ban on the use of plastic bags in the Chamundi Hills. Therefore, visitors should only bring them if they plan to explore the area.
