Upanayanam

Upanayanam means a child or a boy starts to study the Vedic by wear sacred thread on a particular day to start learning. The childbirth date is considered while performing the Upanayana that proclaims Rasi, Nakshatra, and Tithi to perform the upanayana with Karma benefits. Religious Significance of Upanayanam

Apart from marriage, upanayana is the most important religious observance in Vedic culture. Usually performed for male members of the first three varnas, it is one of the Sixteen samskaras. This spiritual initiation is traditionally done at tender years.

Upanayanam in ancient times marked the induction of a child into formal education by the Gurukula system. The person was termed dwija ( twice-born), as the second intellectual birth of a person was by a guru in the father’s place and the sacred Gayatri Mantra in the mother’s place. Shastras advise that for a brahmin child this ritual has to be performed when he is eight years old from conception or seven years and two months old from birth. For Kshatriya, it is 12 years and for Vaishyas, it is sixteen years. Although there existed the tradition of upanayana for girls, over the period of time it’s now a ritual, done only to male offsprings. There is a special tradition of ‘Kamyopanayana’, where upanayanam is done at the age of five for extraordinarily intelligent boys with proper articulation.

Upanayanam of brahmana was performed in spring, Kshatriya in summer, a vaishya in autumn, and rathakara in the rainy season. Only a well-versed pandit can decide the muhurtham of upanayanam as a great deal of astrological aspects is taken into account before deciding the muhurtham of upanayanam preferably in uttarayana kala. Guru graha’s benevolent aspect is deemed most necessary in determining the time.
