Although there existed the tradition of upanayana for girls, over the period of time it's now a ritual, done only to male offsprings. There is a special tradition of 'Kamyopanayana', where upanayanam is done at the age of five for extraordinarily intelligent boys with proper articulation.

The ceremony itself is elaborate and has many rites.
Prayer for moral upliftment during maunji bandhan is done. It is considered the one who purifies the mind and keeps away evil words and strengthens the vatu with each inhalation and exhalation.
Ashmarohana is done stone as a symbol of fixity and firmness.
A staff or danda is another artifact given to the vatu usually from the tree of palasha. In the olden days, the danda was required for support, herding the cattle of guru, for personal protection during travels or entering a river, etc. This staff indicates that the vatu is now the custodian and transmitter of the Vedic culture.
Girdle or mekhala or maunja is a girdle made of munja grass which is tied across the waist of the vatu. Originally it was meant to support the kaupina, a symbol of chastity. This triple corded girdle symbolizes that the student is always encircled by the three Vedas.
Yajnopavitha or the sacred thread made generally of cotton slung from above the left shoulder and below the right arm is the adornment of the vatu. The placement of it is different for different occasions as it marks the wearer as yajnopavitin, prachinavitin, and nivita. The knot binding the three cords called bramha granthi differs according to the pravaras. A married man is given the privilege two wear two janivaras, one for himself and one for his wife whereas the unmarried vatu wears one set of the sacred thread. Every vatu has to wear two pieces of clothing the lower 'vasa' and upper 'uttariya'. As a remnant of this practice, a small ajina is still tied to the janivara( sacred thread) of the vatu to date.
Matru bhojana, where the vatu eats on the same plate as his mother for the last time as after upanayanam he is bound by conduct and codes that govern the Vedic life leaving behind the carefree ways of childhood.
Then Gayatri mantropadesha is done after which the vatu is taught the meaning and ways of performing sandhyavandam and other important religious rites to be performed on a daily basis. He then performs homa and does bhikshatana ( beg for alms) starting with his mother and females of the family marking the beginning of the life of a student.
